USVMC-Toledo and 419 Cares: Serving the homeless with food, warmth, and compassion

Every Sunday in Toledo, a quiet but powerful mission unfolds under the name 419 CARES. This is a program devoted to feeding and clothing the homeless population throughout the Toledo community. What began as a small act of kindness has steadily grown into a dependable resource for men, women, children, and families who struggle with food insecurity and unstable housing.
419 CARES does more than simply offer a meal. Each week, volunteers distribute clothing, hygiene supplies, warm gear during the winter, and essential daily items that many of us take for granted. Hot meals are prepared and served with dignity, and the atmosphere intentionally feels like a community gathering rather than a charity line. They even had volunteers making specialty coffees.

USVMC-TOLEDO LENDING A HELPING HAND:
Today, members of USVMC-Toledo were proud to stand beside 419 CARES and contribute to this important mission. Volunteers from the club passed out clothing provided through PROJECT WARMTH, ensuring that homeless families and individuals had coats, hats, gloves, and cold-weather essentials for the winter season. The partnership reflects the club's ongoing commitment to serving veterans, families and vulnerable community members across Northwest Ohio and surrounding areas.

SERVING FOOD AND SERVING COMMUNITY:
Members also assisted in serving food, handing out meals, helping guide families through the serving line, and making sure everyone was welcomed with dignity and respect. For many individuals experiencing homelessness, these meals are the most reliable source of nutrition they receive all week, and volunteers strive to make each Sunday feel warm, safe, and human.
HELPING THOSE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS:
In addition to distributing clothing and food, USVMC-Toledo members helped carry items for people living with disabilities and mobility issues. Giving a few minutes of physical assistance-whether helping transport bags, pushing a wheelchair, or loading items into a cart-makes a tremendous difference for those who would otherwise struggle to carry needed supplies.

MORE THAN CHARITY-HUMANITY IN ACTION
Both of our organizations understand that homelessness is complex and deeply human. The individuals served every Sunday are not strangers-they are members of our community. Some are veterans, some are elderly, some are families between jobs, and some are simply fighting to survive each day.
The compassion shown through this program reminds us that solutions begin with people helping people. Every meal, every warm coat, and every kind interaction matters.
CONTINUING THE MISSION:
USVMC-Toledo is honored to partner with 419 CARES and will continue supporting local efforts to serve those in need throughout the Toledo area. Together, these acts of service demonstrate that community isn't just a word, it's something you build through action, respect, and compassion.
USVMC-Toledo thanks all of our friends, family, and supporters for all you do.
